Focus: What is Bradbury's vision of our future?  Do you agree?

1. Warm-up: Burned alive...the Kathy Change story

What did she dedicate her life to?
Why did she kill herself so publically?
Do you think her death accomplished anything?
How is she like or unlike Montag? Clarisse?  The woman who burned with her books?

  1. Since there are no history books or anything to tell the past, do you think people are making up history? Like when book burning began and the first firefighter.

    1. I think people may know bits and pieces of what really did happen but I don't they they will ever know...

    2. I think that people will tell the stories about the past and describe what happened.

    3. I think that the government makes up history. They control what is taught in schools and what is written in the Fireman's handbook, which is why it says that Benjamin Franklin is the original firefighter. Benjamin Franklin did burn some books as protest against the British government, but he actually established the library system in Philadelphia.

    4. Well is the future so wasn't books legal at one point so people have the knowing.

    5. I think they don't really know or think about what happened in history because part of the reason the government started burning books was so people wouldn't know the history.

    6. I think the government tells them the history. They think that the government and the tv are completely accurate so they don't need to read.

  2. Do you think Mildred is unstable? Why is she having such a hard time trusting her husband?

    1. I think that Mildred is stable in the society they live in. However I don't believe that she would be stable if she lived into todays society, since she drives so fast and watches so much TV

    2. I think her constant TV watching is leaving her with the feeling that she can't trust anyone. She can't trust anyone because she is also unstable. She constantly tries to kill herself and commit weird acts.

    1. They got outdated or burned.

    2. This book was written long before kindles were even invented. If they did exist then they would quickly be destroyed because they would be easily destroyed and found in comparison to books. For example, it is a lot easier to destroy one kindle that holds a thousand books than it is to destroy one thousand real books.

  4. Page 43, Montag and his wife are fighting. They ask each other questions and it seems they are confused and can not remember things. Why is this?

    1. I think that it is because of when Mildred got flushed, she forgot most of the not super important things and Mildred tries to explain that it doesn't matter even when Guy thinks that it does.

    2. No because Mildred really wants a fourth wall

  7. Are we as a society slowly having changes similar to this books changes?

  8. Why did the author kill off Clarisse? Was it to make Guy think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the author killed off Clarisse to make Guy think on his own and create his own routine. Plus without her Guy will want to learn more and more. It was like kidling for a fire

  9. Clarice asked Montag if he had ever read any of the books. Do you think that could be part of the reason he took one of the books from the ladys house?

  10. During the card game at the fire station, what question does Montag ask? What does it contribute to the plot?

  11. On page 49 Montag says he is sick and is not going to go to work. Do you think Montag is actually sick or just feels guilty about the woman being burned

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Montag isn't really sick but he is instead sick to his stomach about all the stuff that has happened to him in this past day. He needed time to think and reflect on what is going on in his life.

  12. Page 45, Montag and his wife are arguing. His wife says, "I'm so mad I could spit!" Well, every one spits. Is she saying she is actually going to just blow saliva from her mouth? I don't understand why that is like a threat to them. I may just be misinterpreting what she says. Any one want to explain?

  13. Will Clarisse dying make Montag go back to his own ways or have even more of an impact on him to stop burning books:?

  14. Why does Mildred seem so suspicious and unsupportive of Montag?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mildred is like that because everyone is so conformed to this society and this government, that when the tiniest thing is out of the "ordinary" there oppression lived lives will notice it dramatically.

  15. Do you think Montag is feeling no more love for Mildred?

  16. In the section where Montag stays home and calls in sick, is he really sick? He then describes how he'll be back to work in a couple of days. Beatty says that whatever is happening to him is ok, and all fireman have a phase like Montag is having now. Does this mean Montag is staying home so he doesn't burn and that Beatty understands?

  17. do you think that having book illgal is doing anyting for society

  18. On page 42 it say ,"her Seashell was tamped in her ear again..." Why does he put seashells in her ear?

  19. Montag says that TV stands between him and Mildred. Is this happening today?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not nearly as much as they describe it in the book. In F451 they say that Mildred has been spending to much time with her T.V. family. She calls it her family which would never happen unless to a mentally insane person.

    2. I think that Bradbury's predictions in the book eerily resemble what is happening in modern society. We are becoming an increasingly fast paced society, especially due to the internet. As kids we hear "slow and steady wins the race", but once we reach a certain age, everything turns to hurry up. All we do is try to hurry to finish things, so that we can do other things like watch TV.

    3. I believe T.V. in the book couldn't be more like T.V. in society today.

  20. Montag actually does the flower trick on his chin and he believes that he truly isn't in love because the yellow didn't rub off. Why would he believe something so silly and not trust his true feelings about his wife? It says, "The trick was right, I'm not really in love!"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Montag has reflected on his life and the fact that he needs some time to try to remember his life and that dandelion trick is something that he can hold on to and do physically. It gave him hope.

  21. "Then, in the twentieth century, speed up your camera. Books cut shorter. Condensations. Digests. Tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending" (Bradbury 54). Do you think Bradbury predicted EXACTLY what happened with society? Do his predictions for our future hold merit? Are they likely to happen in a world where the internet has provided us with a world of information in a matter of milliseconds?

  22. do you think that montag wnats to live the fire station after what happenned to clarisss?

  23. What do you think is going to happen when Montag finds out about Clarisse's death? Will he stop thinking about her? Or will he keep remembering her?

    ReplyDelete
  24. On page 54 when it says, " They could afford to be different." Do you think it means people could buy different cloths/colors and be unique and different?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think they know what its like to be unique

  25. On page 42 it says, "When did we meet? And where?" I was wondering how are you supposed to love someone and be married to them when you cant even remember their past?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Austin asked who has a bigger impact on montag, the lady who burns herself or Clarrise. I think the woman who burns herself with the books has a stronger message that she sends to the firemen and death is stronger than life.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Do you think Montag was in love with Clarrisse, and her death is what is breaking him and his wife apart?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why does Montag finally decide to rebel and stop being a firefighter?

    ReplyDelete
  29. On page 42 it say ,"her Seashell was tamped in her ear again..." does she really have a seashell, or is it symbolic for something else. Is her seashell her inner concious telling her to rebel against the system?
