All Boys, All Blogged: March 22, 2013

Focus: To what extent is our reality "real"?

1. Warm-up: F451 vocabulary quiz (15-20 minutes)

2. Watching the rest of The Truman Show and adding to your notes

3. If time allows, please respond to the following questions about the ending of the film, posting your thoughtful, detailed response on today's blog:

At the end of the film, Truman and Christof have the following dialogue:

Truman: Was nothing real?

Christof: You were real. That’s what made you so good to watch. Listen to me Truman. There is no more truth out there than there is in the world I created for you. Same lies. Same deceit. But in my world, you have nothing to fear.

Do you agree with Christof when he says that there's nothing Truman can find in the real world that he can't find in Seahaven?  Is Christof a god of some kind?  What does Truman hope to find when he walks through the door?  Finally, when Truman takes his final bow, what is he really leaving behind?  (Feel free to respond to any or all of the above questions; just be sure to use the entire time given).

4. Please Google share your notes with me before you leave class today (kleclaire@lps.k12.co.us)

HW:
1. Please finish #3 on today's agenda if you did not finish in class.
2. Have a great spring break!  Keep all of your F451 annotations as we will be writing a synthesis essay on F451 and The Truman Show when you return from spring break.

  1. I agree to an extent that he has anything he wants, but he wants a real life not one that is on a constant loop the whole time. I don't believe that christof is a god of some sort he has just had a bond with Truman and it is getting better he is letting him leave like a mother and father. When he walks through the door he is looking for the truth. And when he takes a bow he is leaving behind a fake life that he was being deceived about.

  2. I think that Christof is wrong. He can not give Truman everything that is in the outside world. He couldn't give him give him a true family who loves him or an actual wife or real friends. Cause they would all be paid actors. His life would still be a lie, and everybody would be in on it. when he walks through the door I think he is going to find Silvia, he has loved her since he saw her and she is the only real part of his life.

  3. I do not believe Christof when he says he can't find anything new in the real world because his true love Silvia was out there. No Christof is not a God because he created a little world. He isn't in charge of anything when you come to think of it. Truman hopes to find the mysteries of the real world when he walks through the door. And when Truman takes his final bow he is telling Christof that he is no better then Truman.

  4. There is a lot more in the real world then in the Truman Show world. In the Truman show he doesn't make any of his own decisions. In the real world he would have to. Christof is a god of some kind because he created an entire world and populated it. Truman hopes to find something that he can control on the other side of the door. When Truman takes his final bow he is leaving behind his entire life. He will have to start over in the real world.

  5. I think that Truman can find reality and create his own life in the real world because he won’t be controlled. Christof is a god because he created a life for a man and controlled all of it. Truman hopes to find Silvia on the other side of the door because she was the only person who was real to Truman. When Truman takes his final bow he is leaving behind a safe protected life where he doesn't have to worry about real dangers or hard work.

  6. I don't agree with Christoff when he says that there isn't anything in the world that Truman can't get in Sea-haven. There are endless possibilities in the real world because of how big it is. Seahaven can fit inside of a dome so it is obviously a lot smaller. Christoff thinks he is a god and in a way he is. He created a world and was in complete control of it. But an artificial god is nothing like a real god. Real gods are born not made. Truman most likely hopes to find Silvia in the real world and have her answer all of his questions.

  7. I disagree. Truman will never find real relationships in Seahaven. Now that he knows he was being decieved, if he went back, he would be acting too. When he walks through the door I believe that he is looking for Sylvia, someone who he has a real relationship with.

  8. I think that Christof is wrong in every way because he's depriving Truman of a "real" life like all of us have. Truman wants to explore and discover more than just Seahaven island inside the little bubble that he lives but Christof has been cutting him off at every angle. Truman wants to find Lauren/Sylvia Garland, who he thinks is his true love or something, but Christof wont allow him to leave. So no i don't agree with Christof, i completely disagree.

  9. I think that the only thing that Truman really wants is the truth. He wants to know why there are so many weird things that have been happening to him. This movie portrays Christof as a God because it showed how Christof was able to control everything in everybody's life in the show. I think that Christof was right in saying that the real world outside of the studio was just like what was going on in the real world, except that you don't get hurt, but he was wrong in the sense that there is much more to explore in the real world other than just some of the stage props that were set up. When Truman leaves, he is really leaving behind the only life that he knows and he is now walking into the unfamiliar world.

  11. I do believe that Truman can do anything he wants to in the real world like Christof said because Truman has gone through everything a normal human has. I think Christof is a sort of god to Truman because he's been there his whole life and Truman's every move was because of Christof. When Truman walks through the door into the real world I think he's hoping to find his real self and find out who he really is and actually live a normal life by himself. When Truman bows he is really leaving everything he has ever had in his entire life. Its as if he just is starting over and living a whole brand new life.

  12. I my self do not agree with Christof because he thinks that truman will find true love and will be happy in his world he told truman that he has nothing to fear in christoffs world but he feared the water and he fears dogs this is the only way he can find out what the real world is like and he cant find real true love on the show.

  13. I don't agree because part of being in the real world is the fear of robbers or getting in a car crash. Christof was a god to him until he left. Truman hopes to find real people, and be able to roam free and marry who he wants. He's leaving behind this perfect world where no harm is done to him and his life is just about perfect. I agree with him on leaving because he needs to see the real world, and if he stayed he would know whats going on and the show would get boring. Since he left, he's going to have a hard time starting off and living, he will have to get a job that's maybe a little harder than his old one.

  14. Christof is wrong he can't find people who really actually like him and want to get married to him. We see in the film that his own wife wasn't really married to him and everyone was fake and just wanted to be on the TV show. Christof isn't a god yes he created some kind of fake world but our religious idols like god and other figures wouldn't want to keep people boxed in and limit the possibilities. What he finds when he walks through the door is the real world that he hasn't ever experienced before and he leaves fake people, fake friends, fake cars all behind when he leaves through the door. He hopefully will adapt!

  15. I believe that the statement that Christof said was wrong because in this world everyone was acting and the world revolved around him, in real life world not everyone is going to stop everything to find you or be there for you. In his final bow he is leaving behind his fake life and he is going to start off new. He also is saying that it is over and Truman is done with this life.

  16. I disagree with Christof when he says that Truman cannot find a world that is different from Seahaven. I think that the real world is very different from the false one that is created, mostly because Truman is not being watched at every single moment.
I think that in a way, Christof is a god. He created a world for Truman, and controls everything that happens to him. I think the most important thing that Truman shows is even if there is a being that controls our world, we still have the power to choose our own path.
I think that Truman is hoping to find Sylvia when he walks through the door. Obviously suddenly everything will be different when he steps out into the real world, but the one thing that will be the same is Sylvia.
When Truman takes his final bow, he is leaving behind his life. Everything he knows will be gone, and he will step out into essentially a completely different world.

  17. I think that it is true that it would be better to have a safe and worry free life but truman, as a kid wanted to be an explorer and in a dome, he can’t do anything except his routine life.I say that he can’t find love that is not someone who gets paid for loving him. Christof is like a god because he controls what everything and everyone does.Tells them what they say and what they do.If he leaves he’s leaving his whole life around. The people he grew up with and technically his family. He wants to find that girl that he always liked. If Truman is going outside I Think that truman was in the past meaning that there is going to be more technology is he is going to find it interesting but will find that everything else is the same.

  18. I don't agree with Christof when he says that Truman wont be able to find anything in the real world. I think that Truman will find everything, he will gain thousands of new experiences, and learn what it truly means to be human. The censorship he has lived with his whole life will disappear allowing for major growth. Christof is a god to sea haven. The word he uses in his final speech confirms how he believes in this truth. He use words such as creator to first introduce himself to Truman. Truman is really leaving behind home. Everyone does it, usually college student leave home and start a new, Truman just leaves the set.

  19. I do not agree with Christof when he says there is nothing he cant find in the real world that he cant find in Seahaven. In the real world he can find real friends not fake ones. Also he can find and adventure instead of just staying in the same town. I think Christof tries to act like a god. He sees everything Truman does, he controls everything Truman does, he also speaks from above, and can control when the sun goes up and down. Truman hopes to find Silvia and an adventure through the door.

  20. I feel that the outside world is similar to what it can offer Truman but there is more adventures in the outside world. He could have adventure in the dome but can go rafting or snowboarding. He is limited by the islands features and can never travel to try anything else. Christof was a god in a way. He is the god of the dome. He controlled everything that happened including how peoples lives went. I think Truman will find Silvia and they will go on a big adventure. Truman can experience exotic food and places or even go to Fiji. He will see the world in different way whether its good or bad. When Truman takes his bow he is leaving his life and starting over. He isnt Truman any more. He will be a new man.

  21. I strongly disagree with Christof when he says that there is nothing Truman can find in the real world. The world we live in is full of discoveries, many of which we have not found out yet. The struggles and the fears we have in our world is part of what makes it so great. Nobody wants to be a robot living a perfect life, because the struggle is what makes life so exciting. Every day there is a new adventure, but in Truman's life, there is almost nothing that is unexpected. I think when Truman walks through that door he hopes to find freedom and opportunity. Out in this world you can do more than just find yourself, you can create yourself. Truman now has the opportunity to be anything he has ever wanted.

  22. I disagree with Christof when he says that there is nothing in the real world that can't be found in Seahaven. In Seahaven he is lied to and treated poorly, but in the real world he can earn the respect he deserves. He can also make his life what he wants it to be. Christof is kind of like a god. He can control the weather and Truman's life but he doesn't have the same morals. Most gods do the best for the people under them but here Christof is very controlling and cruel. I think Truman hopes to find a world that he will be happy in and thrive. He thinks he will have no struggles and live his whole life in the best possible day. Life will be spontaneous for him rather than programmed. He is also wants to find Sylvia. When Truman takes his final bow he is leaving the life he has been a part of for so long. He is leaving a place that revolves around him, he is leaving a place he doesn't deserve to be treated in that poor way,

  23. I agree with him to an extent because is is more truth out in the real world but there is still alot of lies alot of things that are not real, i wouldent call him some kind of god but i would say he is a leader but a leader that does not have many thoughts. When Truman walks through that door i think he hopes to find truth, the truth that was never given to him. He is just leaveing a bunch of lies.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I do not agree with Christof about Truman not finding anything in the real world that wouldn't be in the show. There is so much stuff he hasn't experienced.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I dont agree because in the real world you face problems and have to over come them and in truens world he does not have any problems to over come and face. He could also not exsplore the because of how big it is.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I do not agree with Christof because Truman's world was fake and every day was the same. You can consider Christof a god of Seahaven because he controlled everything that happened and could brainwash Truman to fearing water because of the scripted death of his "Father." I think that Truman is trying to find what it means to live a "real" life instead of his predetermined life. When Truman takes a bow, he leaves behind the lies and the world he has been living in.
